ABSTRACT This paper, using theoretical and empirical analytical methods, examines the role of local government in politically mobilizing the citizenry for rural development and the attainment of a stable democratic Republic in Nigeria. Following the review of relevant literature on the concepts (rural development, political mobilization, and democracy) involved, and, the categorization of the local governments under reference into urban and rural areas, as well as the analysis of the data collected through our field work, the local governments were identified as the bedrock of political mobilization of the ruralities in our local government areas. Consequent on this, this paper concludes that the role of local government in all spheres of citizens lives cannot be taken for granted within the Nigerian body politics. This conclusion holds, regardless of the geopolitical location of the citizens within the local government areas under focus.
